Marriage and Family Therapists do not condone or engage in discrimination or refuse professional services to anyone on the basis of age, race, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, culture, class, spiritual tradition, marital status or ability. Marriage and Family Therapists value diversity and seek social justice for all with special awareness to those most frequently disenfranchised, such as oppressed groups.

Some may ask why have a diversity statement at all? The board felt that although AAMFT’s Code of Ethics includes a non-discriminatory statement we wanted to expand that to also include issues of social justice and responsibilities of MFT’s to other groups. We wanted to answer the simple question: what do marriage and family therapists stand for? Marriage and family therapists have a responsibility to confront various forms of prejudice in the treatment process. For example, clients who may refer to their neighbors using offensive ethnic or gender slurs. We have a responsibility to find ways to help clients examine these attitudes in a therapeutic way. Beyond our professional role, it is our human responsibility to confront dehumanizing values and seek to become part of the process which changes them. We also have the responsibility to look beyond our middle class bounds to work individually and collectively toward a balance of power in relationships and society best described by the term “social justice.”
