The Central Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CFAMFT) is a professional organization representing marriage and family therapists in the Central Florida area. CFAMFT provides education, supervision, and advocacy at the state and local level for the profession of marriage and family therapy. CFAMFT is a division of the Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, consisting of 23,000 members in the United States, Canada, and abroad. The Association leads the way to increasing understanding, research, and education in the field of marriage and family therapy, and ensures that public needs are met by well-trained practitioners. For more information, see www.aamft.org and www.famft.org.
Clinical members of CFAMFT have completed specific post-graduate training in Marriage and Family Therapy as well as extensive supervised clinical practice with couples and families. Such requirements have allowed AAMFT to successfully advocate for certification and licensure laws in 46 states.
CFAMFT members are employed in a variety of settings including social service agencies, private clinics, hospitals, universities, and independent practices. Members of CFAMFT are also licensed by the Florida Department of Health (under Chapter 491) as Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Social Workers, or Psychologists. Members of all related professions are required to participate in ongoing continuing education to maintain their licensure.
On the national level, AAMFT has been promoting the training and education of Marriage and Family Therapists since 1942. In 1978 the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare recognized AAMFT as the sole national accrediting agency for graduate and post-degree education programs in the field of marriage and family therapy.
